Sky Q Problems

Hello All, this may not be the right place for this post, but I thought I’d try in case it’s something EE related rather than Sky Q…..I have searched other threads for this scenario and not found anything that’s applicable but apologies if I missed it! We have the Busy Home package using the Smart hub pro and 3 smart WiFi (pro?) extenders. We also have, as you may have guessed, Sky Q. The main sky q hub is connected by Ethernet to the first of the extenders, and 2 mini boxes are connected to the other extenders (also all by Ethernet cable). All WiFi settings on the boxes are turned off so technically everything, to my amateur IT eye, is hardwired. However, we are suffering from a lot of lag whenever we try and watch recordings (mainly from the mini boxes) and then hitting play/pause or fast forwarding. It feels like a 3-5 second delay before the box actually responds. In our old house we didn’t suffer these issues when using the BT whole home (white) discs and everything is flawless, which leads me to potentially suspect with something with the EE Equipment. Please note we have already tried changing the Sky Q boxes in case they were faulty and the same problem remains. In addition the same problem occurs with using the WiFi on the boxes…..and Ethernet “unplugged”. I have seen mention of using compatible WiFi but surely that’s not needed if everything is hardwired to the extenders? Any help is gratefully received.

@AndrewKLCC You need to try the comapitible wi-fi feature, having the units wired to extenders then you are still using wireless comms, unless you can hardwire the Extenders all the way back to the main router! Also see if this posting helps you in anyway.

Hi Jim, many thanks for your response, I had seen that thread already and couldn’t see anything that was directly related to my scenario but I will check it again. With regard to the wireless, surely that’s a red herring? Our wireless speeds in the house are very good, so there are no problems on the extenders communicating with each other, and the boxes are tapping directly into the extender and its bandwidth rather than any WiFi per se?

@AndrewKLCC It's your choice, but you are using the wireless network to link all the Q and mini together.

Even if I am connecting the boxes to the Extenders using Ethernet and the WiFi on the boxes turned off?

@AndrewKLCC Yes, how do you think that each extenders talks to each other and to the main router. You do not have those wired to each other.

All you have done is connected each device by cable, then THEY (the extenders) send and communicate over wireless..

Ah yes I get that but would there not be other symptoms showing with regard to the WiFi etc? To get the nub, I am guessing that I need to try the compatible WiFi setting (for the whole house WiFi), and if not, then the only solution is to hardwire the extenders to the router somehow!

@AndrewKLCC NO, setup the comp wifi call it say SKYQ and a password, then have it wpa2-psk mode, that will pass through to each off the nodes, and hopefully the q and minis will use that and transmit between each other, see how that goes.

@AndrewKLCC Sky Q and mini box wireless/wired networking at best is a complete mess and really older mesh style network and can be really awkward to setup and get performing well. does seem that wired is best, but have not used for years sent all the stuff back to sky as was just so bad and unstable, but have also had a quick look on the Sky Q Forum so see from below.

Last time i did and we are talking 5-6 years ago was on my son's and the mini i networked cabled to the hub, the Q i wifi networked it to hub, and it was all on Vodafone broadband at the time, but rather than mess with it all, i looked at the Q main box, got whatever details i could and matched it all up, used the sky name for the ssid and the password, now whether that was from a previous sky broadband box or not that i cannot remember, but it may be the case, anyway that method worked fine for them for a couple off years until the ditched the Q system all together, now they are firestick freaks as i like to call it...

Sky Q mini boxes will not connect by WiFi to 3rd party broadband or 3rd party WiFi units.

On third party broadband they will only connect if using WiFi to main Q boxes or Q WiFi boosters.

If you want to use a WiFi booster to connect a mini it must be a Q WiFi booster which must first be connected by WPS to the main Q box or a connected mini.
