ONT box in integral garage

I've got Openreach coming out in 10 days to install my FTTP.  In an ideal world I would have the ONT fitted where the current BT master phone socket is in our kitchen but it won't fit in that space. The current copper line comes in through the garage, the hole being a few inches from the master socket. My current BT Smarthub is about a metre away from the phone socket.

The neatest solution for me would be to install the ONT in the garage, next to the hole that goes through to the kitchen. Will they do that? It is technically indoors and there is a power socket nearby for the ONT. A 2m ethernet cable would easily reach the new Smarthub from the ONT in the garage. TIA.

@Vendee That should not be a problem as long as there is no sharp bends for the fibre incoming cable and you do have a power socket nearby for the ONT. Router can go wherever you need from that point, just Ethernet cable from the ONT to the Router.

@Vendee   Make sure you have the kettle on and stock up on choccy biscuits before Openreach arrive and most will be happy to do whatever is reasonably possible on the day.

There are limitations, but the easier you can make the job, the more likley you are going to get what you want.

How is your line going to be fed, via a pole or underground and is the path clear. You can get more info if you enter your details - phone number,  or use the address option from the BTW DSL Checker - https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL    Use the desktop version, not a mobile, and the text below and to the right of the table gives more details of how it will be delivered.

Can't the ONT be placed where the phone socket is now (they are about the same size) & its cable follow the route of the existing landline cable, via the garage?

Hello, just to warn you it depends who you get. My plusnet fttp install was done by Quinn on behalf of openreach.

They would not install the grey box (csp) just inside the garage, it was installed outside. I wanted it 12 inches away on the inside and they said no, it has to be outside.

Cables have to run all the way down the wall then back to the ONT which is inside the house.

i contacted openreach and they were very uncooperative and strictly refused to move it to where I asked for, saying I had agreed to the current location. Infact I was TOLD the location. They seem to forget who owns my property.

just to note they also will not go on the garage roof if your overhead cable is there.

I've read that many others have their csp in the garage or even the attic if it’s fully boarded. so just be aware, if you get a Quinn contractor, he’s not interested in chocolate biscuits or tea, he just wants to get the job done and will not deviate from the standards.

Afterwards, openreach wil not change anything.

@ukguy1 100% correct about the M J Quinn contractor to OR, i kicked the guy out as he did the same, that's where it needs to go, down the wall, your having a laugh i said, no that's where it's going, not on my watch it's not, OR came 3 weeks later, fitted it all in the attic dormer with zero issue what so ever. Done and dusted in 1hour, they even refused the tea/coffee or biscuits as it left them with 3 hours extra time with the scheduled 4 hours they get per install....

Interesting!
just goes to show it doesn’t “have to go there”.

thanks for that, nice to know 👍

Mine arrived in an OR van also marked with C.J.Quinn but I forgot to ask who he was with as he did an excellent job, v. tidy & fixed the cables & boxes exactly where I wanted them, close to & parallel to my existing landline/FTTC.
