Not getting guaranteed speeds through a Ethernet

I have recently bought the busiest home broadband package for my house as I am a gamer I plug my Ethernet in to the router and i am only pulling 900-920mbs although this is still fast I wanted as was hoping I’d get more I know the router lan cable ports are capped to maybe 1gb but I was wondering if anyone could help in suggesting a router that will get me guaranteed speeds of what I pay for through a Ethernet cable?

@Charley9910 Search the forum there is plenty information regarding the subject. '1.6gb speeds' in the search will find you topics regarding what others have done plus it is just more than a router that is required. HTH

The supplied router from EE only has 1Gb lan ports, so you will never get more than your getting now

You will need to invest in a router that has some 2.5Gb lan ports to get the full 1.6Gb, also another point is, does your PC/Gaming console have a 2.5Gb lan port, if not then you will be back to the 900Mbs

A decent router is going to cost you a few pennies though

Thanks for the reply I have a ps5 but I’m absolutely clueless when I comes to routers I’ve been trying to figure it out myself but I’m struggling as I don’t understand what a lot of it means, do you know any routers that will help get me the guaranteed speeds through Ethernet while still getting good speeds through out the house with easy setup? No problem if not I appreciate it!

@Charley9910 Your PS5 has only a G/byte ethernet port, connect it by cable to the router, and don't waste your money trying to upgrade/replace your router. You will not get any faster than that. But it is a shared resource and you will get your 1.6Gb/s but across a few devices, The guarantee is the speed to your router, not the speed to your device....

As JimM11 as said your going to waste your money buying a more capable router, until you have something that can utilise the extra speed

Unfortunately many people will be buying the 1.6Gb speed without realising their not going to be able to use it. Probably 90.00%  of PC's/Gaming consoles only have a 1Gb lan

@Brugie58 And as a footnote, Son bought 1GB package VM on XGS-PON fibre, Showed him Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 was up there and pushed the speeds to max absolutely NO issues, PS5 Speed test and downloads on Sony Servers in the tank, he would have been better on a 300mb/s package and saved a LOT of money.... That's how it goes, NOTHING he has requires anywhere near max speed at any time. He is looking to get off it asap when the contract ends 13 months to go and counting down.....

@JimM11, Yes most people can manage with lower speeds, In my case I am in the MS Windows testing club, so need to download large packages every week, without slowing anything else down in the house, so I can sort of warrant the 1.6Gb, plus it works out no less expensive when you take a couple of mobile phone sims into the equation

@Brugie58 Did the same, and combined mobile, do worry though when fibre does become more prevalent will speed contention come into play more and more, only got to worry about MS updates once per month, and daughter/mother fighting over band width for 4K HD movie streaming, would be great to justify such high speed's but really cant do it now. 👍

@JimM11 I think the way Openreach will play it is, as the lines start to become more and more saturated, they will start upgrading to the XG/S-PON in the exchanges where required, otherwise everyone are going to start seeing low speeds of 30/50Mb on lines, which just aren't going to be acceptable, that's my theory anyway. I would not be surprised if its already happening
