New Full Fibre - Not even close to “1.6gb”

Ok. I ordered the new EE full fibre “busiest home” package, it’s showing (and advertised) as speeds up to 1.6gb, and the EE app even shows “1.3gb (guaranteed) download speeds, well…….no!

mine just got installed and I’m getting the exact same speed I was getting using my 4G SIM card router (up to 70mbps) the highest it’s been is up to 177mbps then it drops again. I have been reading on some of these forums and apparently the router EE provide isn’t capable of speeds up to 1.3 or 1.6gb, so why even provide customers with it?! I’m massively disappointed with this, they expect customers to pay 69 quid a month for a speed my 4G router delivers??

I’ve done all usual checks, changing wifi channels etc nothing improves it so on that basis It’s either the router itself limiting the speed or the outside line (which apparently they check before install) although it’s a new fibre line that was put in.

For example, my Xbox is the only thing connected right now, im downloading a game update of 5GB which is showing as completing in 40 minutes, it’s only coming in around 155mbps (highest) and drops to roughly 40ish mbps. It should be much faster than this surely??

I don’t want to seem ungrateful but am I expecting to much? Or am I within my right to question this?

It's true that Ethernet connections are limited to 1 Gig by the LAN ports but WiFi should be higher. How are you testing?

Anyway EE's given & guaranteed speeds are to the router itself, not speedtests at your devices.

@Zerofks

Are you testing the speed on Wi-Fi, if yes your never going to get the 1.3/1.6Gb. Have you tested via ethernet ?. But bear in mind that you wont get more than 1Gb via the EE router as it only has 1Gb lan ports.

If you want to use the maximum speed, your going to need a proper router to do the job.

Best test it using an ethernet cable 1st, Wi-Fi can be very problematic, all depends on walls etc. Are the receiving devices capable of higher speeds as well

@Brugie58 not exactly...

When I got my 1.6 Gbps "Busiest Home Broadband" package, I was getting up to 1.4 Gbps ON WIFI with supplied /hence crap/ router from EE - obviously LAN was limited to 1Gbps due ports are only 1 Gbps - however, only if not contested with other devices and only one device connected...

However, this router is couple months nicely in the box, at storage under my bed 🙂 and with third party solution, I have now 1.6 Gbps backbone on LAN as well as WiFi, and occasionally at nights, getting up to 1.7 Gbps (product it's in fact 1.8 Gbps with guaranteed 1.3 Gbps to the provided EE router/ but normally up to 1.4=1.5 Gbps even at peak times /GAN with all ports deployed in the building, on limited - in progress of upgrading due another 2 buildings getting connected now - link to exchange/.

When OP mentoning absolutely low values, it is evident, as fault must be somewhere. Either his router/ONT is not correctly configured by EE, and limiting him on much lower speeds, or cables might have problem.

It will be very interesting to see, what EE app will show, as speed to the router, if that will be 1.3 Gbps plus, EE will assume, all is ok. If that will be lower, they will need to send OR engineer to investigate further, and if not solver up to certain time, customer will receive some mediocre compensation due not adhered to guaraneed speed.

Not worth nothing, as provided EE router will not give OP any control about Channel wide, and other settings.

Originally my EE router decided, as 80 Mhz channel wide is sufficient, but over 24 hours, put self to 160 Mhz channel wide, across whole WiFi-I on 5Ghz channels, and subsequently, another 24 hours later, I found it on WiFi-II part of 5 Ghz, on channel 100 which pleased all my neighbours, whilst to do 160 Mhz on channel 42 was stupid a lot :)))

Other words, router utilize "smart" channels only, and moving randomly between channels, and even between 80 and 160 Mhz wide of it. Not acceptable for my user case, I want control of it in my own hands, not by very dumb router.

Yes my EE router is still in the delivery package wrapped as delivered 😁

Personally I don't know what speed the EE router does on Wi-Fi, as I said it's still wrapped up.

Yes does sound there is a problem with @Zerofks , but without seeing the setup it can be difficult to nail down

155mbps (and even less) does seem low for an Xbox (Series X I guess at this point), even on WiFi!

On my phone (just done a speedtest from upstairs), I'm getting 450mbps on my phone on a 500mbps connection. So you should be getting more.

How far is the Xbox from the router?

I’m testing using an online speed tester, and EEs own speed test in the hub manager. I’m already shopping around for a better router. ASUS seem to have good ones with great reviews. I don’t understand how they can claim these speeds then give customers equipment that can’t even deliver it.

There’s certainly something affecting the speeds you are getting from the hub  (I pay for 500mbps and get 450mbps on a mobile device upstairs)

Have you tried connecting a PC/laptop directly by Ethernet to check the speeds there? Is that normal?  - you might not be able to get 1.6Gbps over WiFi on an Xbox but certainly should be able to get at least 500mbps

Where is the Xbox - how far away is it from the EE SH+?
