New 900mbs broadband poor performance

Hi 😊 I had the 900/110 broadband package installed today and it’s performing very poorly. The speed varies wildly between 35-380 download and 9-90 upload . One of my devices is connected directly to the router and the best I could get from that was 90/50 .

I’ve read that this package doesn’t take time to settle so ….. am I stuck with it ? ☹️ Can anyone help ?

Many thanks in advance

The speed of the card is in both directions, so I doubt it's that.

All service providers impose an upload limit that is a lot less than the download, usually about 10%. So if you are only getting 50 on a 1gb package that sounds like a problem, but it's EE's problem. I doubt its got anything to do with the device or even the router, its something they are imposing from their end I would think.

My package is 500 down and 50 up. Better than I had before with Virgin Cable (200 down and 20 up) for about half the price - so I guess I can't complain !

@MJMinogue  Hi 👋🏿 I double checked and this is what I found

So I changed the settings until I found one that said 433 mbs

As you can imagine , I was super excited and ran a speed test , only to find it had gone up to a measly 119DL and UL is still 51 ☹️

Do you have the option to choose 12 in that second picture?

That should give you access to the greatest speed options, 10-11 stops you getting the top one.

@Mustrum  Yes … 12 is in pic one and as you can see in the photo on the right , it only gives 72.2 . I just don’t get it 😖

I do have a more positive update though , it won’t fix my Dell laptops weird issues but …

I managed to get through to someone more helpful today @ EE. The lady I spoke to confirmed what I had previously tried to tell them , that is , the router is capped @ 50UL. It’s a setting that needs changing and is now getting done at their end and should hopefully be fixed in 48 hours 😅

@VWhteaide  good news on the 50 unblock, hope that does not take too long to clear.

Re the Wi-Fi speeds thing, alas it is a long story! BT for some reason combined 2.4 and 5Gbps bands on the same SSID on their routers some time ago. Some will say the earlier EE routers were far better, but the bean counters came along and routers are now based on BT ones. . On their earlier routers you could separate the bands to help get the best Wi-Fi speeds on 5Ghz channels, or go for lower speeds over a greater distance on the 2.4 ones. Alas on their latest, including the Smart Router which is based on the BT equivalent, you cant separate bands.  Some devices can cope, but for me - and many others it is far better to have separate SSID's and let the devices choose the best for the conditions.

In your case you have tried altering your Wi-Fi card settings, well the router also has a few you could try in the Advanced Wi-Fi settings tab - but the combination could be more than most could be bothered with.

Maybe a look back at square 1, what do you want from the internet, why do you choose 900, what did not do what you wanted on your previous service?

Yes - I noticed that straight away. On my old Virgin Cable router you could rename the 2.4 & 5ghz bands, but you can't with this one. Not seen any problems as a result ... yet !

On your general point about what users expect to do with the bandwidth, I agree 100%. When you have paid for something, you expect to get what was advertised, but how much difference does it actually make ? Ok so my Inspiron only has a 100 mbps card - but for browsing the web and watching sky sports in HD, 100 of visible bandwidth at the PC is plenty ! The reason I went for 500 was to get some extra headroom on the house network when there are 10+ devices attached, plus it gave me twice the bandwidth for half the price over Virgin plus future proofing.

I guess as long as service providers market the packages on the basis that "more is good and most is best" users will sign up for the top package !

In my case the “upgrade “ is performing very poorly. I teach online via Skype with multiple devices connected and I’ve never had as many freezes. Every single lesson has multiple freezes and some,  “poor connection” messages 😖

This has of course happened occasionally on my old 67mb package but always with the same students so presumably was an issue at their end. Now it’s every lesson and is very embarrassing.

If its as bad as that then something is very clearly wrong. Id be interested to see what EE say the problem is and what they are going to do about it !

Hi @MJMinogue

If you give us a call on 0800 079 8586 the team will get this looked into for you.

Leanne.

@MJMinogue  Well there’s an issue with the router being capped at 50UL ( confirmed by EE ) which is being fixed but I doubt that’s causing the freezes as it’s still running at 90DL and 50UL .

hopefully that CAN also cause this though 🤞🏿

The fix can take 48 hr to get done but the lady wasn’t sure if that includes weekends or not. Obviously not as it’s still capped but she’s phoning me for an update tomorrow. I hadn’t mentioned the freezing as I had only delivered a couple of lessons when I spoke to her so I’ll mention this too.
