Nat loopback random working on ee router

I have  a fairly modern ee broadband router.
After some investigation I have discovered that if I ping the routers external ip address from a device attached via WiFi to the router it will work , but if I ping it via a device attached to a lan port on the router it disappears and times out.  This seems to be termed as Nat loopback issue or hairpin issues. Googling also shows similar problems on many BT routers, which I think are basically the same.

I can see several people have reported problems like this , but not one specifically like it, or maybe i have accidentally drilled down to a better identification of the same problem. Anyone found the same or of a way around it please?

Which fairly modern EE BB router?

Both Ethernet & wireless pings work on my fairly old EE BB router.

It’s an upright one, just labelled ee smart hub. I reckon maybe 3 or 4 years old. Last firmware update nov 23.
