Getting rid of BT/EE router?

nothingtosee

Hiya,

I am running my own networking at home with access points, switches, POE and all the fancy stuff. The BT/EE router I have at home is not doing anything apart from providing internet connection. I'm not using it's DNS, DHCP, WiFi. It's only gateway and no more.

The question I have is: Can I get rid of BT/EE router completely and use a 3rd party router? I have an openreach fibre converter that will be staying in but instead of connecting it to BT/EE router's WAN I'd like to connect it to my own router's WAN.

Is that achievable? If so, would I need to contact EE for initial setup or would that just work?

Yes, you may use any suitable router as long as you're not taking DV from EE when the EE supplied router needs to be the 1st in line from the BB supply (phone socket or ONT). In Using & Configuring a Third Party Router you'll find everything you need to set up your router incl. the BB PPPoE creds. which are now the same as BT's.

What is this OR fibre converter? Is it the small box fixed to an inner wall that brings in Full Fibre (the ONT)?

Yes. That's the small box taking in fibre and having rj45 as output. It goes to BT router via cat5. My plan is to replug that cable to unifi gateway instead and have it all set without the native router.

I see it's possible so I'll head out to find a new router for myself and will be setting it all up later on.

Thanks! You're welcome 🙂 ! Glad I could be of assistance & trust it is now sorted.
