EE Smart Hub Massive Latency Spikes

Hello All,

I switched from BT to directly with EE a few months back and as part of this I switched from the BT branded Wifi hub to the EE smart WIFI hub plus. Previously I was able to causally game with no issues via wifi.

Other than changing the Hubs, there has been no change what so ever in my set up. Download speed tests show I'm well above 100mbps. However since the change, when I'm gaming the ping will normally sit around 25, but every 20 or so seconds I'm getting massive lag spikes where my ping is hitting 300-400.

I've reset the hub and my PC multiple times with no effect every time. I've even changed my wifi adaptor on my PC.

EE in live chat can only suggest getting a wired connection. This won't work for myself due to house layout being awkward to string a wire around, hence why I use Wifi.

I've noticed others in the forum have raised this exact issue, citing it may be a defect with the hub. Has anyone had any luck resolving this, as so far EE haven't taken on board my complaints about the poor connection.

Just giving this thread a bump. I have the exact same issue as @AyrshireCSC . Never happened on BT but since the switchover to the EE equipment the ping spikes have been unbearable. However I do find when connected to the SH+ over WiFi the ping stays low and consistent, it’s when I’m connected to an extender I get the issues. This leads me to believe this is an issue with the SW+ extenders- they seem to add a ton of latency and the ping is terrible. I’m hoping the new Wi-Fi 7 equipment will fix these issues!

@Colesey Is your Extender the EE Smartwifi and possible multiples of them, and are you using them totally wireless or perhaps wired backhaul to the router? Any wireless extender has the possibility to introduce latency into the system especially if  multiple wireless devices are trying to be serviced at the same time!

@JimM11 yep 2 smart WiFi plus extenders. And unfortunately totally wireless as an L shaped 3 storey house is a complicated job to run Ethernet all around it. When on BT the connection was rock solid with the exact same setup as now just different equipment. I totally understand WiFi is no where near as reliable as Ethernet but before I had no issues so how can this be explained other than the kit EE supply is totally inferior to the BT equipment?

Do not turn WiFi Enhancer on whatever you do if your on over a 1gb package, it will drop your connection below 400mb. Too many problems for me so unfortunately I have had to get out of my contract and go elsewhere. Shame really but irreconcilable issues here with EE. The service I have received overall has been exceptionally poor including people who know nothing about this new 1.6Gb package simply sending out new equipment - I have 3 hubs and 6 WiFi extenders....why!!!

@Colesey Do you still have the BT Router and the extenders used at that time? They work on the EE service. Cannot compare as use Asus AI mesh, and you may be fully correct in what you are saying. The BT to EE is not like for like equipment wise.

It's the built in WiFi Enhancer that is the problem. Their solution is to factory reset your device...but you may have to do this 2 or 3 times a DAY. Sorry, but not on. Unfortunately the BT equipment can only handle up to 1gb due to the circuits, but latency a different league to EEs faulty rubbish. Also, why are they supplying Cat 5 cables to connect the ONT to the hub? It can again only handle 1GB...! Should be providing equipment that actually works!!!

@AyrshireCSC Sure they are not supplying cat5e cables, not much cat 5 about by now time wise!

They are supplying Cat 5E cables with SH+, however Cat 5E is good enough to handle multiple GB despite not being officially classified as being capable of handling such speeds.

See this

Ethernet cables speed tested @ 2.5 Gbps. Cat 5E,Cat 6 and Cat 7 cables SPEED comparision!

@JimM11 nope had to return them to avoid charge. Problem is I’m kinda stuck with the EE extenders as I have TV and it seems too problematic to use a 3rd party router.

Yes sorry cat 5e cables! Why not 6 though for connections over 1gb? Anyway, so many problems to name with them. Wifi by far the biggest issue - I get more stable latency on my phone network!!
