This does seem to be a repeating issue, but community answers I've seen don't solve it.
I can't find my account number in my online account - one of the answers says I won't even though EE Help gives some outdated instructions (i.e. there is no 'account settings' option in menu).
I was originally on orange broadband, so I don't have a welcome email (which is the 'where to find' answer most frequently given). And I've never had a paper bill from EE cos I'd already gone paperless with Orange.
I do have a letter that may have it, but I'm unclear whether that refers to my mobile account or broadband.
Is it possible to get the account number without phoning (45 minute waiting time)?

@CollardEarthsta If paying by direct debit, have they possibly used the Account number as the DD reference?

I too had this issue. I eventually got through to someone and asked for the account number. It appears that my account hadn't properly transferred from BT to EE. I can now see my account number, but only when I go to My Bills
