BT broadband full WiFi transfer to EE 1.6gbps

BT broadband to EE 1.6gbps

What a pain it has been to switch over to EE to get new router and faster speeds. Initially I was told they can order the 1.6gbps broadband from EE as I had by complete WiFi and i agreed only then after the phone call ended I noticed they simply transferred over like for like package on EE and found I then had to pay more not much but still £1 more. I was later told to let my order complete and I can then regrade and get the 1.6gb fibre from EE. I then checked on EE and it was still showing as I have the 900mb package. A few days passed, however  to my surprise it now shows I can get rhe 1.6 gbps package from EE. So when I called again to day I was told I can’t get it even though I am on full fibre fttp as the people on the phone said they can’t see the offer so can’t provide this to me  so firstly I was misled and missold what I was ordering then now their site doesn’t match it states I can get which is mis advertising. I have spent a number hours on the phone.

Hey @paulpep1thanks for your query.
(I am in Seville at the moment) connecting via a server in Madrid)
I am sorry I do not have particular knowledge of the ASUS ROG Rapture GT AXE16000 as I have not used it, however, Internet searches suggest that it will work although it is considered expensive.
Personally I use the TP-Link Tri-Band BE9300 WiFi 7 Router Archer BE550 that I purchased and imported from the USA before it was available in the UK.
It is now available in the UK for about £300.00 from Amazon and others.
It is simple to setup and configure.
My previous posts give connection speeds for WiFi tests; I only use WiFi for printers & Sky streaming and use Ethernet for computer where I regularly achieve connection at 2.6Gbps using VPN to select servers that offer high bandwidth & speeds.

¡Buena suerte!

I would check the accuracy on those results.

Even if you were over provisioned that much which I highly doubt, the ONT still only has a 2.5gig WAN port. With ethernet overheads you would more likely see a maximum of 2.3gbps. Even then as EE still use PPPoE, unless you're running a very fast CPU that has a really good single core performance, you absolutely will not see that due to the significant overheads PPPoE introduces which is most likely the reason they introduced it at 1.6gbps in the first place.

Hey @Ollmall...

I note your comments and observations where you state you "highly doubt"could only be considered if you had all the facts and not made assumptions concerning the specification of my equipment including the ONT, which you do not.
You are, however, correct when you highlight PPPoE as being a limiting factor.

¡Buena suerte!

Unless you're going to tell me your router and ONT have higher than a 2.5gbe port, then I thought my assumptions would be pretty safe 🙂

Hey @Ollmall

To answer your query I am fortunate, I do have particular kit and at the moment fairly future proof if you are prepared to pay.

This is what I have in UK:
BE19000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Router Archer BE800 (no longer available in UK - it is in EU & USA)
Sonnet Solo 10G Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adaptor
Adtron 10G SDX 630 series ONT

The laptop I use varies with my need and where I am, all are capable of high speed connection:

Samsung Galaxy Book3 Ultra
Intel® EVO Core i9-13900H Processor
(2.6 GHz up to 5.4 GHz 24 MB L3 Cache)
Windows 11 Pro

Lenovo Thinkpad P17 Gen 1
Intel Xeon W-10885M vPro Processor
(2.40GHz, up to 5.30GHz with Turbo Boost, 8 Cores, 16MB Cache)
Windows 10 Pro Workstation

Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 2
13th Gen Intel® Core i9-13980HX Processor
(E-cores up to 4.00 GHz P-cores up to 5.60 GHz) - (Total cores 24)
Windows 11 Pro (Spanish OS)

I hope this helps you.

¡Buena suerte!

I don’t disagree with you in future proofing your home. My home network runs on a 10 gigabit backbone via fibre runs and UniFi Enterprise switches. People may say this is insane but I do have application for it in my work and I enjoy doing it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What I’m more curious about is how you got OpenReach to provision your custom ONT as I wouldn’t have thought they would be willing to do that?

Even with all that I still think they only over-provision to around 1.8gbps so the fact that you’re saying you’re seeing 2.6gbps speeds doesn’t seem right to me. Have you got a screenshot of achieving those speeds? I’m genuinely intrigued by your results.

I had the same problem when trying to switch from BT Full fibre, I got sold the package, then told it’s not available for BT transfers. And even now when I login to the EE app, it’s offering me a renewal contract, and when I check it says nothing available.

FishSlapper
Explorer

i had the exact same issue.

Hey @Ollmall

Thanks again, I am in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain (about 90km south of Seville) for some of this week and do not have the info you request at this office though I also do not want to open a "can of worms" by making some things public, however, what I can say is that the achieved speeds can only be made via VPN routing to specific servers, of course only because of some of the kit I have. You can read exactly what is written.
