New PAYG Sim Can't register as emergency calls only?

Hi people,

I've just received my new PAYG sim from EE and am trying to register it. The mobile connection is showing as emergency calls only, so when it wants to send me a security code to finalise the registration process I'm not receiving the number. I know that there's coverage for my area, so it's not that. Does anyone know why it's doing this and how I can resolve it please?

Thanks

@Ethelred

First thing to try, if you haven’t already, is to see if the phone recognises that a SIM has been inserted. If it can’t see it, remove the SIM, clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth and reinsert it again.

Was the phone previously used with an EE SIM? Or is it an unlocked phone? If it is locked to another network, that could be the reason it won’t recognise your EE SIM.

Hey there,

Thanks so much for getting back to me..
The phone recognises the Sim, as it's saying Emergency Calls Only - EE and
it also states EE under my Sim details under settings..
The phone is unlocked to any network, I was previously using GiffGaff..

Any ideas based on that info would be eternally appreciated!

Thank you

Force the phone to do a manual search for a Network Operator & select EE.

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone

ISPs: 1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up > 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB > 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB > 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU > 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU > 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC > 2014: EE 20 Meg WBC > 2020: EE 40 Meg FTTC > 2022:EE 80 Meg FTTC SoGEA > 2025 EE 150 Meg FTTP

Sadly not.. Although interestingly, the phone DOES pick up that there's a 4g EE signal to manually find and will connect to it as such, but still then reverts back to the old ee emergency calls only..

@Jon_K Wondered if you had any ideas mate? Or anyone else, for that matter.. Running out of patience here.. Thanks

Is it possible to try the SIM card in another device, @Ethelred?

Chris

Thanks for your comment..

I don't have another device that'd take the Sim unfortunately..

The phone was definitely unlocked when I bought it, so pretty sure the
handset's okay to use it in..

Every so often it looks like it's going to connect to the network, where it
shows a few signal bars, but never gets to 4g and then just reverts back to
the miserable empty black triangle of zero signal..

Thanks @Ethelred

Have you had a working EE SIM before? What is the coverage like in your area?

You can check on our coverage checker.

Chris

It's my first EE sim mate..

I live in the Hebredes, so the coverage for most networks is patchy and barely G, but I checked the coverage on the EE site and it advised good connection and 4g outside..
