Can I Use my own phone when getting a phone contract?

Hi everyone so I have a question I would like to know the answer too! (I tried ringing EE today to ask but was on hold for 40 minutes so gave up!)

I want to get a cheaper contract I'm currently paying £34 a month (SIM Free, I Bought my phone outright) And I've found a contract for £12 a month however It's for a phone so I Would be getting the phone as well. I'm only interested in the cheap contract and would prefer to use my own phone, is that possible? Like can I just put the phone that's part of the contract in a safe place and put the sim in my own phone or do I have to use the phone?

Thanks

John
