Hi everyone,
spoke to an advisor this morning but the advice seemed a bit “on script” so looking for a more technical help. I have to edit Wikipedia as part of my job, basically ensuring technical records are up to date as part of my job description, I always did this via my phone for the last 4 years.
got a new handset yesterday and went to edit on it last night. A range of IP addresses, of which my phone seems to have been assigned to has been blocked by Wikipedia. The advisor therefore told me to use the iphones “reset network settings” function which I did. While the IP refreshed, the third part of the IPv6 IP address remained in the same/similar, which is what Wiki seem to be using for the blanket ban.
having compared my old and new handset, the first two parts of the IPv6 address are the same on both handsets, but the 3rd part onwards is different. My understanding is if I jump in the car and drive 25/30 miles and refresh then it might resolve the problem, but how do I change it without having to do that? My concern is that if I can’t shift away from the fixed aspect of my IP address, I might be forced to move to another provider as it’s essential this block doesn’t effect me or return the handset and just use the old phone. Grateful for any help on this complex matter.
Just for added info:
- same SIM in both phones
- same location

Hi @Millerman46
Welcome to the community.
Do you edit through the browser or through an app? Do you know why Wikipedia have blocked these IP addresses?

The IP ranges will normally be allocated on a regional basis, so your driving theory is in the right ballpark.
I would expect all EE (and potentially BT/EE broadband customers too) users in your region to be potentially affected by this IP block, so I agree it would be useful to know Wikipedia's basis for any IP blacklisting.

@bristolian : BB IPs are not issued by where you are but where they were registered by the ISP.

@Christopher_G Editing through a browser. As soon as I hit edit I’m presented with a message saying IP range blocked due to persistent misuse. From what I can see, someone in the same IP range has taken a liking to vandalizing pages.
@bristolian @XRaySpeX so am I right that I’ve been allocated some form of fixed IP based on my location where I registered and can’t change it?
As I mentioned briefly, my old phone on EE I can fire that up and it connects to a different IP and works fine. I’m just wondering if every time I return to my home address if it’ll revert to the same/similar IP or if I get one that’s completely new?

Assuming your using Mobile Data on your Phone rather than access through a WiFi Router, go to your Mobile Network Settings, probably into Advanced, then find APN Settings or Access Point Name, go to IP Type or IPV Protocol, what is this set to, something like Auto, IPV6 or IPV4/6 then change this to IPV4 or IPV4 Only, Save, Restart Phone. Try this.

Most likely on the same IP. The EE mobile network employs Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT) resulting in a double NAT, which means that you don't get your own public IP address but share it with other users.
