Advantage or disadvantage of changing from monthly plan to Sim only plan

I am due an upgrade on my IPhone 8S plus but don’t want a new phone. If I opt for a sim only deal can I retain my existing number and is there anything different to my old monthly plan?

Yes you can keep your number - if you're outside your minimum term then changing to SIM only is just a change of payment plan. Nothing more, nothing less.
