5G Huawei CPE PRO modem dropping

I have a 5G unlimited data SIM in an unlocked Huawei CPE PRO modem from Amazon  which has never been that reliable but is now driving me nuts. It drops for a few seconds at least a dozen times a day but can be more (and as I'm typing this it has dropped twice!) I know this because I listen to the radio via a smart speaker and it is very clear when it happens. As it is when streaming Amazon/BBC for example on the TV. It generally reconnects and resumes automatically except if the drop is longer.

 

I have ploughed through various posts and I have as recommended:

 

  • rebooted many times
  • factory reset many times 
  • changed the protocol via the APN to ipv4 
  • also used LTE H Monitor to disable the 5G signal as that seems to drop as well at times i.e. the green 5G light is off
  • tethered to both a 5G and 4G phones and there were no drops at all over the days I used them

I have now come to the end of my technical limits so if anybody has any idea I'd be grateful to learn of it.

If the firmware is already at the latest for that particular model, I would recommend to consider returning it to the vendor as a faulty device, given the debugging which you have already performed.

Thanks for your reply Mike. Yes, the firmware is up-to-date so I have contacted Huawei as you suggested because I am of the opinion the router is not fit for purpose but I just wanted to check I hadn't overlooked anything obvious from the EE point of view. Jill

You may wish to consider the list of 5G routers in the below thread if you consider that the online reviews suggest the Huawei is somewhat flaky.

Netgear M5 MR5200 (retails GBP 500 to GBP 700) https://www.netgear.com/uk/home/mobile-wifi/hotspots/mr5200/ (crazy price but I think was used by some US carriers as their stock device, AT&T perhaps as an example)

 

ZyXEL NR5101 (retails around GBP 550) https://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/products_services/5G-NR-Indoor-Router-NR5101/ (manual under tech support and includes support for IP Passthrough, has SSH support and other things but lack of load-balancing multi-WAN has me leaning towards MR5200 for something more compact and flexible/portable)

 

D-Link DWR-2101 (retails around GBP 300) https://www.dlink.com/en/products/dwr-2101-5g-wi-fi-6-mobile-hotspot (probably the cheapest 5G WiFi 6 mobile router I'm aware of but ruled out as cannot be powered with battery removed)

 

Less noteworthy ones are:

 

ZyXEL NR2101 (seems to share similarities with the cheaper D-Link but also has various quality and build differences)

 

ZyXEL NR7101 (outdoor but lack of RJ45 reduces flexibility for consumer usage)

 

D-Link DWR-978 (recently found out about this one and don't know much about it)

 

Huawei E6878-370 (portable Balong 500)

 

HTC 5G Hub https://www.htc.com/uk/5g/htc-5g-hub/ (don't know much about this one)

Login into your Routers Admin Page, when at the Huawei Router Home Page paste this into your Browser then hit return -

http://192.168.8.1/api/device/signal

 

It should bring up a String of Info, copy and paste all the info to here.
