Hi. I've had a new gate and intercom fitted. The fitter has told me that the intercom needs a SIM as follows: "it doesn't need data and has to be calls and text only 2g sim". I happen to have an EE 4g SIM I'm not using. Does anyone know if it would work or do I need to source a 2g SIM? Thanks

EE SIMs can support all the 'G's. They just "downgrade' to the capability of the device they are in.
Presumably your SIM is PAYG. You will need to keep it topped-up to make calls & texts.
To save the SIM going into hibernation due to lack of use, just remember within every 179 days (~ 6 months) to make a chargeable action like making a chargeable call or text, topping up or buying a Pack or Add-on, not just using your mins, texts or data from any Pack or Add-on you might have.

@XRaySpeX Thanks for the speedy reply and you were spot on! The intercom engineer said it wouldn't work, and carried out saying that until the moment it did. The SIM, incidentally, is PAYM rather than PAYG - for some reason, when I upgraded during the summer, it was cheaper to take a second SIM (that I didn't need) than to refuse it, go figure...
