Hate to burst your bubble but this isn't exactly true... Apple (and pretty much everybody else) "ran out" of stock on the 15th of september when the preorders went live. When you were told that phones would be available towards the end of october, that didn't mean you should wait and try again then, it meant if you ordered a phone that day (launch day in your case) you'd be waiting until the end of october for the device to be shipped to you.
Despite this massive delay, small quanities of pro maxes have been periodically "in stock" from different retailers; we know of some costomers who have been lucky at ordering with EE on Blue Titanium and received stock next day; Giffgaff have had a small stream of stock in pretty much all colours/models over the last week and, if you're lucky, Apple stores themselves have been stocking small numbers randomly (lakeside currently has black titanium in stock as I type this, for example).
