My contract ended a while ago but realised I need to upgrade.
I pay the phone bill and it’s in my name, yet when I go to upgrade it is saying the account holder needs to log in, yet I am the account homder

You don't ever "need" to upgrade, you just have the option to do so once your minimum term has expired.
Your contract will continue regardless.

@Caitash01 : You need to be set up as the Bill Payer under Account Settings > Manage Numbers
