Smartwatch Paired or Unpaired Plan?

Hi. I’m a tech fan but a smartwatch noob. I’m looking at getting the new Apple Watch Series 10. However I’m not sure if to go for a paired or unpaired plan.

The cheapest paired plan looks like a logical choice. Only 4GB data but it would share my phone plan data which is unlimited, so no issues there. The only problem is that my EE sim plan ends next year. What happens to my watch and plan if I decide to switch phone network? Also, I always take my number with me if I switch network. Would this still be possible with a paired plan?

On the other hand, if I go for the unpaired plan will I be able to mirror notifications from my phone to be able to message, call and reply essentially via my mobile’s number rather than that of the watch? What features would be unavailable/limited by doing it this way

Thank you in advance.

Hi @thesilentred82

Welcome to our community.

The Apple Watch Series 10 does look like a great choice for your first smartwatch.

Your watch contract would be separate from your SIM contract, so you could still make changes and even port out without it affecting the contract itself. The watch however would no longer be paired as they need to be on the same account to work that way.

If you decided not to get a data plan for the watch, you can still pair it with your phone and it will work when the phone is nearby. It would still allow the same functions as with a data plan, the only difference is that the watch would not be paired when out of proximity of the phone.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

I got the watch with an unpaired plan not really knowing what it meant. I should have gotten a paired plan. Is there any way to change plan?

Hi @ewanwhatling

Thanks for your question.

Where did you buy the watch from?

Lesley

EE, the app

@ewanwhatling If you have accidentally setup purchased your watch on an unpaired plan, if you give us a call on 150 from your EE mobile and let us know, one of our guides can setup to change you to a paired watch plan instead.

Once the plan is changed to a paired plan you will then be able to set it up on the watch by opening the Watch app, selecting Mobile service, then setup Mobile service.
