EE smart number / WiFi calling on iCloud connected devices fails to work

Has anyone experienced persistent glitches with the EE smart number / WiFi Calling on iCloud connected devices feature?
For context, this is a feature that lets you place calls from other Apple devices signed into the same iCloud account (e.g. iPads and Macs) as long as they are connected to the internet even if your iPhone is switched off or offline (https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/offers-and-services/ee-smart-number/one-number)
I can set it up and get it to work for a few hours, and then it just stops working. I have to switch WiFi calling on and off on my iPhone and MacBook in order to get it to work again. I have been having this issue with several generations of iPhones and MacBooks, which suggests the issue is to do with EE.
