Son broke phone screen before paid anything

Hi, I bought my son a phone for his birthday, on contract. Id not even set it up or anything, not even out of the box. He got it out, he's autistic so does take things sometimes. He's shattered the screen, I got insurance with the contract. I haven't paid anything yet until the end of the month. Is it still covered? Thanks
