My phone is not switching on and I am not due an upgrade until next February!

The immediate response is that if you are within your minimum-term, then you're very likely under warranty and thus a local repair may be appropriate - https://ee.co.uk/local-repairs 

An upgrade will almost certainly be at cost. There is some troubleshooting you can try on any Android device - https://support.google.com/android/answer/7662405?hl=en-GB
