I've had my phone (Google Pixel) just under a year and it was in mint condition. I started having an issue whereby my phone would crash, even when I wasn't using it and got stuck in a reboot loop. Eventually, it was so bad it wouldn't stay on for a second without crashing and was totally unusable.
A quick search on the google forum told me this was a common issue!
As my phone is still under warranty, I took it to a store. The process felt too easy - that should've been my first warning sign.
The Assistant Manager struggled to take the case off, even mentioning how robust the case was and then examined all the sides, corners, and glass for any damage. She recorded on the repair receipt that it was in great condition and there were no marking or dents and agreed it was likely a software fault.
She filled out some paperwork and explained that it would be sent off and repaired. I thought, great! Again, too easy.
I followed my phone on the tracking and it took 7 days to arrive at the repair centre.
It then took a further 3 days to go to an engineer.
Today I received an email quoting me £230 as apparently my warranty is void as there is a noticeable crack in the corner casing. I have always had a case on my phone and it has never been dropped - how would it crack underneath a thick case when it hasn't been dropped?!
Somewhere between me handing the phone over, it being packed, going through transit, being handled by whoever accepted it and handed over to an engineer it has been cracked and now EE are trying to pass the blame.
After a million different calls and being passed between various departments, I was told the only way to avoid paying, is to prove that the crack wasn't there. At the time I wasn't sure where the crack was so I shared a video with them that my partner took when my phone was stuck in the reboot loop but naturally not sufficient evidence as I have a case on where the crack now is. At no point in the process was I told to take photos of my device - I also didn't think to as it was in mint condition. The Assistant Manager at the branch who examined and confirmed there were no dents/markings didn't take any photos or ask me if I wanted to. I also sent them on the repair receipt, which they already have which says there are no markings or dents.
A quick search of the EE community shows that this seems to be a recurring issue and I think it's a tactic to get away with having to fix faulty phones so proceed with caution. I have asked if there is an independent agency I can complain to investigate EE's practices as I think this is ridiculous.
I have insurance separately from EE so the easiest thing would be to cut my losses and go down the insurance route but I refuse to pay an excess fee when the fault is with the model and lies with EE/Google.
Please please please if you read this, take photos of your device before you send it off.

This is interesting but also very sad to see.
Having the exact same issue. I'm not with EE but my Pixel 7's touchscreen stopped responding. Everything else was fine, ony 11 months old so not even halfway through the 2 year warranty.
Support chat with Google said to take it to local EE store who would send off for repair. 5 days later I get a phonecall at 8am to tell me they can't repair under warranty because the phone has been opened by an unauthorised party: claiming that there are scratches in the corner that look like they are from the inside of the glass and the glue at the bottom has caused the screen to separate.
To me that's the cause of the issue - manufacturing fault that stopped the touchscreen responding. But to them it means I have invalidated my warranty and they want me to pay!
They haven't even bothered to send me a quite but asked if I accepted it! No, I bloody don't! How SBE (who EE sent the phone to) got this gig from Google is beyond me. But I am livid and still have no phone. How dare they accuse me of lying and opening the phone?
I honestly don't know how to proceed - oh and SBE are barefaced liars too. I asked why a professional company was using guitar plectrums to repair phones instead of actual tools (they sent me a photo with an orange Dunlop Tortex .60mm pick stuck under the screen showing it being raised). Their reply? "We can confirm the tools that is in the picture is not a guitar pick, they are special tools that are supplied by the manufacturer." And I'm supposed to believe them when they say there warranty is invalid?

Hello @MaFt.
Thanks for coming here.
I am sorry to hear that you have experienced this when sending your phone for a repair with SBE.
Have you been able to raise this with Google?

Yeah, they don't care. They're siding with SBE saying what they say must be true. Really not happy.

Thanks for getting back to me @MaFt.
It could be worth getting back in touch.
As you aren't an EE customer we don't have an account to look into this further.

I bought a Samsung flip phone and after 3 months the display stopped working. Send it back for repair in perfect condition, not even a scratch as the phone was always with screen protector and in a protective case. After few days, they sent me a picture with my phone in which clearly can be seen that they removed just a bit the screen protector in one corner and stating that the phone is damaged and I should pay for the repair. I went back to the store and the employee there, which checked the phone prior sending it to the repair, confirmed that the phone was intact and emailed them back. After multiple calls and complaints, they refused to fix it. Even after the EE store confirmed that the phone was intact. Obviously this company doesn’t care about their customers and the worst part is that they call me and even theirs employees liars. Now, I end up with an 3 years contract on a broken phone. Disgraceful company

They sent me the exact same pictures with my phone screen being somehow unglued in one corner… with absolutely no other marks or cracks around. How that’s even possible… hard to tell. Obviously, this is their reason not to fix phones…

Thanks for the extra info @Cristian151
I'd recommend following our complaints process. If you opened one when you called, you can escalate this. If not, you can see the ways to do so here Make a Complaint | Contact Us | EE.
