Is there a way to avoid having the banner appear for 5 seconds at the bottom of the screen when selecting a channel?

No, but you can press the back button to get rid of it straight away.

Pretty poor setup. Also is there any way to go straight to my recordings instead of going via Home Screen then moving left, then down to my TV?
