Calls from similar number

Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.

Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.

I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

Hopefully nothing will come of it, @MC339, but we'd advise against calling unknown numbers in case scammers get hold of your number.

I had the same thing, 2 missed calls from a number with 3 digits different to mine, I called back, and a man claimed he hadn’t used his phone today, but I’d received 2 calls from his number

Not with EE but I used to be. My guess is that this might be related to the recent Facebook hack. The scam calls from a number very similar to mine have definitely picked up in the past few months, which coincides with the Facebook data leak. Millions of phone numbers were compromised in that one.

You might be onto something here, I've just checked my number out on haveibeenpwned.com (international format so 447XXXXXXXXX) and it's showing up as being in that FB hack.

Well James,

This particular thig is happening only to EE customers, so are you going to actually try and find a real solution or just keep skirting around the problem. Because what will happen here is, if EE does not acknowledge our grievances, and that in fact OUR security as valued customers has clearly been breached, then we might as well go to another network.

If we fear a breach in security and it is not an isolated incident, and you receive several submissions of customers complaining about the same thing, it is literally your job EE to take action rather than offer deflective questions and whilst avoiding to acknowledge that there is a problem at hand.

@Safetyfirst, unfortunately it is not happening to EE customers only. See my post above.

Hi @Safetyfirst,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

Number spoofing, where a caller alters the caller ID, is an issue that affects all mobile networks worldwide.

You can find more information on this over at the Ofcom website, and in this community article.

Hope this helps.

I have just stumbled across this thread as in the past three days I have had 4 missed calls all from similar numbers to  mine, the only difference being the last three digits. I have not answered any of the calls but I do find it very strange that this is happening.

This exact issue is happening to me. Today I’ve had three missed calls from numbers which are just two or three digits different to my own. What’s going on EE? How do I stop it and is my phone at risk?
