Calls from similar number

Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.

Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.

I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

Hi @Nicola93x

I am sorry to hear you have received these calls.

Unwanted marketing calls and number spoofing (where nuisance callers and criminals deliberately alter the caller ID) are problems that affect users of all mobile networks.

You can report the call to EE, if you text 'call' to 7726 followed by a space, then the number that called you, we will get this looked into.

Thanks.

Leanne.

I've had the same thing happen to me this last few weeks. I block them all then a different one rings me. And when I ring it back it just says welcome to the Ee network??

James

In your reply to my post it seems as if you either missed or deliberately avoided my issue with missed calls!

Can you please investigate how it’s possible to receive calls from numbers almost identical to mine?

This wasn’t an isolated incident as it happened again since. And, in reading posts from other EE customers, it’s not only me!

Hi @Lizzy_G,

Nuisance callers, marketers and criminals will often manipulate the caller ID to make it appear they are calling from a genuine mobile number.

You can find out more about number spoofing on the Ofcom website.

Hope this helps.

I’ve had 10 of these calls now, all the same as my number except the last 3 digits. I am getting sick of them, if I answer when they call sometimes they just hang up straight away or sometimes it’s someone calling me back saying they had a missed call from me (but I’ve never rang them). I keep blocking the numbers that ring but then a different number will ring me, considering changing my phone number it’s got that bad.

Hi @rhiannarodd.

Welcome to the community.

I'm sorry to hear this is happening.

If you'd like to change your number due to unwanted/harassment calls, our Customer Care team can complete this for you.

Jon

It’s called neighbour spoofing.

do not answer these calls they are scam calls and they are trying to see if the line of active.

I can’t believe EE aren’t doing anything about this and their tech doesn’t know it hmmm.

@Vikmc87 What would you like EE to do about it? They don't know if the CLI being sent from an external network is correct or not. Until UK networks fix this problem using CLI authentication, there's not a lot they can do about it.

Could they not educate their customers that this is a thing? Or even their own teams?

If you see some of the earlier posts from the tech team they don’t even acknowledge that this is an issue/scam.

Re: Calls from similar number

Hi @Norris1,

I don't think you have anything to worry about from a security perspective, but I appreciate these calls can be concerning.

Have you looked into blocking numbers from unknown callers on your phone? What type of phone do you have?

James

You Hun cannot throw out such comments unless you can evidence that this is the case! I have this week received calls from two numbers and the first 9 digits are identical to mine. Furthermore this is certainly a suspicious call for each a new every person writing on this forum. The matter needs to be addressed as there is an obvious compromise to data.
