I have ordered a replacement sim as the old one stopped working. I cannot get a verification code to activate new one and I cannot speak to a real person about this. I am totally frustrated as it's for my mother in law who needs her phone.

The SIM does not just stop working. You can obtain a new SIM immediately from any EE store. Alternatively you'll need to speak to EE CS.
