Reactive a old mobile number

Hi 

my son has been studying abroad in Japan  for 12 months . I paid for his mobile /sim in our family account for many years his tel will be available to see before Aug 2024 on my EE account due to the charges  he did not use this sim or tel number in Japan 

we requested a pay as you go sim to transfer his number to but that never happened I think we where supposed to text or use it ever 3 months or so 😳

he returns to uk with his old sim and tel number and is keen to keep this number ( friends and family contacts ) is there a way of doing that if it’s not been use for 12 months

If he did not keep the number alive it will be dead by now after 12 months.
