Leaving EE, new sim cannot connect

I am leaving EE and have got all necessary codes and asked for transfer. 
my new sim is in my phone but no network 

how long does it take for EE to release my number?

Should be within 1 working day of you activating your new SIM on your new network. You did give them your PAC from EE?

For a port-in to EE, you are allocated a temporary number enabling service until the one working day it takes to action the PAC.

You should otherwise ask your new network for their process, and timescales.
