Changing sim

I’m looking to switch to EE sim only, but would like to keep my number from my current provider. When I’ve been looking to take out the sim deal, it’s asking for my PAC code, I don’t want my current contract to end until I have recieved my new SIM card, does the PAC code get used immediately or not until I receive the sim??
