Just want to upload 2 photos on arrival in USA to security. I think I understand that I will need £5 for the day to roam. Once the plane has arrived is it immediate that the choice of roaming plan will show and is it immediate or is there a delay. I need to upload 2 photos before I disembark plane. Thank you. It's a great shame I can no longer speak to a human at EE who might help me with this and set it up in advance so that it is ready to go for me. Thank you again for help

To enable the roaming permissions to allow access to foreign networks and thus the ability to roam, is free. Text ROAMING to 150 before leaving the UK.
You can make & receive calls, and send texts on a per-minute/per-text basis. Mobile data can only be used with a bundle, and this will likely mean the daily pass. That daily pass enables the use of your UK-call, text & data allowances whilst in your host country.
When your phone first connects to a foreign network, you'll receive a welcome text message which contains a link to purchasing that add-on.

Did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150? Having a roaming billing add-on doesn't of itself activate roaming on your a/c. Having roaming activated on your EE a/c, not just on your device, is crucial to using your contract SIM abroad.
Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Also try selecting a network manually rather than auto.
Otherwise if you are on contract you need to call CS to get your roaming activated. Try calling CS on the Freephone no. in my sig. on Skype over WiFi. It should be free.
To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone
