Using WhatsApp (or any other internet-app) proves your phone has a working internet-connection... is that using WiFi or mobile data?
Has your phone worked in Australia, prior, on this trip? Have you tried manually swapping between networks, and are the symptoms the same? Can you make outbound calls? Can you send or receive text messages?
