Extra charges for using WhatsApp while Roaming in Spain

I have the £20/m month roaming pass for use while I'm in Spain for 2 months. I expected to be able to use WhatsApp without charge. Then I read that I may be charged extra to use this app while Roaming abroad and am rather confused as to exactly what this means;

  • I assume I WON'T be charged if I switch Roaming off & then connect a call through WiFi?
  • If I can't connect to WiFi, WILL I be charged for making a WhatsApp call while Roaming is still switched on?
  • If I accept a WhatsApp incoming call while Roaming is still switched on, WILL I be charged?
  • I have been in Spain for a couple of weeks already & am concerned I am racking up extra charges while using WhatsApp without a WiFi connection. However, I went to my account to check if any additional costs have been added already & couldn't see any but are any likely to appear? If I am going to get charged at all, can someone please explain why?

Where did you read this?

The £25/billing month Roam Pass allows full use of your UK allowances in the selected countries. That means making & receiving direct-dialled voice calls using your phone's dialler, sending & receiving text messages via the messages app, and using mobile data upto a 50GB FUP.

Use of any internet-app (WhatsApp, FB, BBC News, Sky Sports, take your pick) is handled as data and charged accordingly. If you have a mobile data allowance, the Roam Abroad pass extends use of that within the EU, USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia & NZ.

You won't be charged for using data by your apps but it will eat into your data allowance. Furthermore should you run out of data you won't be able use any more unless you explicitly buy some.

Try logging onto EE on an Windows PC after being locked out of your account after 2 try's on  a mobile! And then being mysteriously being let back in the my PC after being told I had to reset! Then try to find replies to your post on the community forum which I was actually reading when I suddenly first got locked out .

It also took me an age to find & sign up to a monthly roaming pass (on a PC not via text) It used to be simple but no longer as it's buried deep into navigating many menus!  I've posted a question for clarity o  Roaming & WhatsApp charges & was actually reading the replies when EE kicked me off & now I cant find the answers which I know have been posted. Who on earth designed (or interfered with as it used to be quiet used friendly &  intuitive!) the EE main website & the Community Forum website? I do my best to keep up with technology & internet developments & am well conversed with websites & have extensive experience on several Forums but this scenario is far too complicated for most folks to navigate; who on earth is designing/running your websites? Being cynical, it smacks to me of "lets make it as difficult as possible for folks to understand the site or get timely, satisfactory answers" then before you know it, you have a heafty, unexpected charge to your account! Rant over, I will now try and find my post, unless I get locked out again of course!

An internet search will bring up "data charges may apply, check with your network provider". But I know I've also seen a warning on the EE website that "charges may apply if I use a web chat service while Roaming" - but after searching the site this morning, I can't find it! Thanks for clearing this up for me.
