EE roaming in China

I'm travelling to China and planning to activate 7 day roaming to use my plan as normal. Does anyone know if WhatsApp etc. will work this way or will I also need a VPN? Thanks

@Pinkfrog19  Yes what’s app should work as it uses data.   And yes I would personally use a VPN.     

A quick google search brings up

While roaming in China, you can technically use a VPN, but be aware that the Chinese government only approves VPNs that comply with its requirements, and bans those that don't

EE roaming in China is all tunnelled through the UK. Therefore, in my experience (Feb 2025), you won’t encounter any blocked pages, and won’t need a VPN for this purpose.

You will be using the radio coverage of the Chinese networks, but your data traffic will normally be routed through EE's UK central network.
