I have a pay as you go SIM but haven't topped it up as I've been abroad for a few months. I'm wondering if my number will be gone by the time I get back as that happened to my friend after months of inactivity.
Also could I get a family member to top it up for me if I am at risk of losing it?
For some reason my EE app won't let me top anything up, I have to do it all by text/phone and I'm worried I'll get charged

When did you previously use it for a chargeable action? EE PAYG SIMs are deactivated after 6 months of non-chargeable use. You then have a further 3 months to call EE to reactivate it before it is lost completely.
You needed to make a chargeable action like making a chargeable call or text, topping up or buying a Pack or Add-on, not just using your mins, texts or data from your pack.
If it has gone into hibernation it is now too late to top it up.
