Hi,

Going to South Africa on 2nd November for 18 days.

Going to buy a cheap PAYG phone from EE as I don't want to either damage or get my smart phone stolen.

Can I buy the phone and bundle now and activate it the day before I fly?, and what is the best cheap phone bundle to get?.

I know that my minutes etc are not usable in South Africa and I will have to pay roaming charges, I just need a phone so that family and work can get in tough with me whilst I am away.

Also what do I need to do before I leave the UK to make sure that I can receive calls and texts whilst in South Africa?.

Cheers.

Make sure you make a chargeable call or text while you are in UK.

As it is not in EU, you cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out on PAYG tab in https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs/countries/southafrica .

Hi @andyg59

So if I'm understanding correctly. You're planning to get a PAYG phone with a temporary number to take with you to South Africa rather than take your usual pay monthly device and pay roaming.

If this is the case and it's literally a cheap PAYG for South Africa use, I'd take a look at one of the competitors (namely Vodafone) as they offer PAYG bundles for use in South Africa (and 73 other countries).

Think it's approx £25 for a two weeks package that gives you a set amount of mins, texts and data (think it's 4GB) to use in South Africa

Might be an option for the two weeks you'll be there if you plan on using your device.

Hi, thanks for the reply, you got it exactly right.

I will take a look.
