Landline with smart hub plus

I goty smart hub + installed today. I didn't buy one of EE's smart digital phones because the guy on the phone when I changed over said I don't need one. 

My regular digital phone (bought 4 years ago) now says 'check phone line'. I have tried with the home phone adapter and onto the socket of the router to no avail!

@ECKN : Could your phone still be working from from the BT phone socket on the wall?

When you ordered your EE BB did you order landline as well?
