New Customer Scam?

I placed an order for a sim card yesterday on the website.
This morning, I received the following message apparently from EE, regarding my order.

I followed the link and was connected with a guide who told me I needed to pay a £250 deposit, which he said would be refunded in 3 months. At this point, I became suspicious, but decided to proceed (with caution).  He then asked me to join a "screen sharing session" at https://eu2.lightico.com/ so I could approve the updated Terms & Conditions. I did a quick search, and it seemed legitimate, so I continued.

I read and approved the terms and conditions documents, and they didn't mention a deposit of any kind. When I queried this with my "guide", he told me to screenshot the chat as proof (???).

He then provided me with a link to https://ee.relayplus.com which he said I could use to make the payment. I have not followed it as I am obviously concerned that this may be a phishing scam. I plan to call EE customer service and see if they are able to confirm or deny this, but wanted to post on the forums, too, in case others receive (or have received) similar messages.

Hi @NinaMyhan

Welcome to the community.

I can understand the need to be wary of anything asking for details and payments.

In this case, everything you have mentioned does seem to be genuine and systems that our guides would use. If you want to be 100% sure though, for your own peace of mind, our guides are available for you to call directly.

Hi @NinaMyhan

Just call EE if you're unsure.

That sounds like you're a poor credit risk and therefore EE have asked for a refundable deposit, which is EE normal approach.

Thanks

Hi All,

Thanks for getting back to me about this. It's reassuring to know that it appears to be legitimate. I was particularly wary because I know scammers can sometimes spoof phone numbers and URLs, and as the link to make payment was for an external site I wanted to be sure before I submitted any payment information. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks again,

Nina
