Would I be charged the £2.29 per day for EU roaming if I do not use my phone at all?

No, you wouldn't be charged if you didn't use your phone.

Please be aware you'll need to turn off data roaming to prevent your phone from using data in the background.

@RGA1 : No, as long as you don't make any calls or texts or use any data over the mobile network. You could still keep it on & only use it over WiFi.
