Is my SIM speed capped?

Hi - looking to move my son's SIM only from a family plan to him having his own contract as he's now 18. They've offered me:

  • SIM only deal
  • 24 month contract (currently on 30 day rolling contract)
  • Unlimited data, calls and texts
  • Free EU roaming (don't currently have this so have to pay the £2.27 per day when we're abroad which is no more than 3 weeks per year)
  • Speed capped at 100mb per second

They've said that this speed cap is what he currently has but at the moment his is down as "MP 30D Essential SIM UL Max £36" which I thought didn't have a speed cap?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks

Essential Unlimited Max plans (No longer offered) were Uncapped Speeds, as opposed to Essential Unlimited Plans which were 100 Mbps speed capped. Typically customers paid a privilege for this over usual  Essential Unlimited plans but, as you've mentioned, EU Roaming was at an additional cost.

As it is a Multi-Product Benefits/EE One tariff you have at the moment as a result of EE Broadband, it is significantly discounted for you and is on a 1-month rolling term. This discounting ability does not extend to his account and as such there will always be a difference in what he is offered separately to your account.

Since the tariffs changed on 29th August 2024, the only plans offered with Uncapped Speeds are now All Rounder and Full Works plans. Essentials Unl Max has been replaced by Essentials Plus which includes EU Roaming but is now capped at 100 Mbps speed.

100 Mbps is a significant amount of speed on a mobile device and more than enough for even 4K Streaming.

@Stoufferoo   His current tariff is an essential tariff so yes it’s limited to 100 meg.

Thanks Matt, that's great. We thought it was uncapped and I did wonder if it was an old offer.

He does quite a bit of gaming on his phone too so I think the speed might make a difference? With the Broadband discount rolled in too maybe not worth moving unless he starts travelling a lot more and benefitting from the EU Roaming.

Much appreciated!
