I’m looking to changing my plan, as I’m out of contract. Before doing so, I need to check if I’ll be able to activate a selected extra, as I cannot receive SMS from the device the SIM is installed in.
I live in a very rural location, with no viable wired broadband, and my Internet is provided through EE 4/5G. This is achieved with the SIM fitted to a 5G Outdoor Router, mounted on a pole high on the roof for a good signal. The SIM is therefore not easily accessible and the Outdoor Router is purely for data connectivity - it doesn’t support receiving voice calls or SMS messages.
What alternatives are there to activating an add-on/Extra if the SMS messages cannot be received on the device the SIM is fitted to?
Thanks in advance.

Hi @Matt_124 ,
It's a ZyXel NR7101, which has no support for accessing SMS or managing them via the GUI. There is claimed to be a way to interact with the SMS subsystem using AT commands through the CLI, but this is only possible with root or supervisor login, which is not provided.

There are some data only SIMs available on our website @Kjaerligkatt. You can see the option on this link.
Some of the plans do mention inclusive extras, but it would be a similar position to activate them where you'd either need access to the SIM or have options to view the text another way as @Matt_124 mentioned.
The only thing with ordering from that link is that it would be as a new contract, and therefor a new SIM. The other option would be to speak to our upgrades team to see what they can do on the existing SIM for you.

Thank you @Michael_D .
I think I'll have to speak with the upgrade team - those data SIMs you linked say they are limited to 100mbps speeds, which is significantly less than I get now. Having to replace the SIM is also not ideal, as I'll need to go up a ladder to switch it - something I wouldn't want to do until the better Spring weather arrives.
It shouldn't be this difficult to renew a plan 😀 (no criticism intended, was just hoping this could be done easily and quickly online)
