My contract ended 7 months ago. I then went abroad. I have just returned to the UK and found that my EE number has been disconnected.

I assume that I would be a pay as you go, because my contract ended 6 months ago. I cannot receive or send messages.

It sounds like you gave cancellation notice on your pay-monthly contract, but potentially travelled abroad before that 30days notice had run its course. As a result, your new PAYG line has never been activated and thus has now been hibernated due to lack of chargeable usage in over 179 days,
If so, you have a ~90day grace period from when hibernation occurred, to contact EE-CS and request reactivation before 273 days elapse. Once you pass that period, your number & credit is permanently lost.
