“You’ve dialled an incorrect number”

NicJH

Dialling my parents’ landline this morning, just as I did yesterday, however today I’m told the number is “incorrect” turns out any call I make to the same dialling code is also incorrect but calls to landlines with a different code go through fine…why has this just started to happen today? My phone is an iPhone 13…

Hi @NicJH

Thanks for coming here.

Are the numbers UK landlines?

Have you tried restarting your iPhone?

Speak soon 🙂

Which service provider do they use for the landline?

I had this problem some time ago but the opposite way round calling a new allocated Three number starting 07312 from TalkTalk landline but worked from a BT landline. I was told that the directory of telephone numbers hadn't been updated fast enough for the new allocation of numbers so when the call was made it was a number wasn't recognised message.

If your parents have just joined a service provider with a new number, this could explain the problem and means EE hasn't updated its database of numbers.

I also had a problem calling new 020 3 London numbers back when they opened the 020 3 allocation and back then I was a T-Mobile customer, it just came up You have dialled an incorrect number please check the number and Redial. Again using a BT Payphone to call that particular 020 3 number had no problems and connected without problems.

Let me know if they are using a New number and which service provider they use.

This is why BT Operator Assistance on 100 should be available on mobile phones because they can answer this problem straight away, strangely International Operator Assistance is available on 155 at a premium rate so I don't know why 100 for national Operator Assistance isn't available.

Hi Nick - thanks for these ideas. My parents have been using this same landline number for 10 plus years and I've never had any issues until recently, I used to be able to ring them from my phone, no problem. They are with Vodafone.

And have they moved to Vodafone's VoIP service (Connect their landline phone into the broadband router) or are they still using a copper Openreach line?

Please don't post the whole number (this is a public internet forum) but what's the first 6 digits?

And what part of the country - general area will suffice - are you in?

Hi thanks for coming back to me…I have been able to resolve the problem
now, it was simple in the end, just turned off WIFI calling on my iPhone
and suddenly all was well again…I wonder if it was a glitch with the phone?
iPhone 13…it has never happened again since

Thanks again!

That's an odd glitch to have, but glad it is all solved

WiFi calling can be a bit glitchy I have problems with signal on all networks and therefore have kept and still use a BT landline for most calls at home and don't think WiFi calling is reliable enough to change this.

When I was asking you about if your parents use Vodafone's VoiP service, that too can be glitchy and if the Internet connection or power is interrupted, when you call a Vodafone Voip number and the Internet connection is disrupted or if the power is off, it doesn't ring and says you've dialled an incorrect number. I used Vodafone Broadband for a year which now they give you a Voip service instead of traditional copper line and I didn't like it one bit so went back to BT.  There isn't even any calling features or voicemail service with Vodafone Voip.

WiFi-calling is a very reliable service, but is only as good as the broadband connection & router that you're using.

There is no reason that you shouldn't be able to rely on WiFi-calling in most poor coverage scenarios.
