How can a number that called me be incorrect?

MattyLevan

I just received a call from a mobile number I didn't recognise. The call was silent so in case there was a problem I hung up and then redialled. I did not type in any number so there is zero chance I made a mistake. I went calls> recents and then tapped the most recent caller.
In response I got the computer voice saying "You've dialled an incorrect number, please check the number and try again".

How is this possible? The number existed seconds before in order to call me but then suddenly didn't.

It didn't exist seconds ago. Some scammer is spoofing nos. in order disguise their own nos. to trick peeps. See OFCOM - Number spoofing scams

The caller in question may have an incoming call bar active, or unconditional divert to a non-existent number.

If you're desperate to find out, try texting them, which won't be affected by either.
