So angry - stuck in the US with a phone not working for the second time in a month, despite ee assuring me it would work this time. It's basically impossible to contact them from abroad when phone not letting me make calls - I can receive whatsapps etc, have roaming plus etc and told ee over the phone when I would be here, but still can't make or receive calls

This is happening to me too, and I'm very angry about it as it happened a few weeks back when I was in the states and I was assured by ee that it would work this time, how do I contact you if I can't make calls even on wi-fi!?

exactly this, finding it impossible to get any direct contact with EE

Turn off your automatic network selection and pick the network from top to bottom manually.Just pick one and have a look if it works.I have had the same but i have managed to contact EE from States and this have solved my issue.Let me know if that helped

Thanks - can't find network selection, it's iPhone 15 pro - I go to mobile service and no option to see network selection to turn automatic on or off?

Hi @angryman100,
To manually select a network, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Network Selection > Turn off Automatic.
Hope this helps. 🙂

@angryman100 : Are you on contract or PAYG? Did you use that SIM for making calls or texts in UK before you left to go abroad?
If you are on contract, did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150? Having a roaming billing add-on doesn't of itself activate roaming on your a/c. Having roaming activated on your EE a/c, not just on your device, is crucial to using your contract SIM abroad.
Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Also try selecting a network manually rather than auto. Otherwise you need to call CS to get your roaming activated. Try calling CS on the Freephone no. in my sig. on Skype over WiFi. It should be free.

You mention being able to use mobile-data based functions - check whether you are using this, or are inadvertently connected to WiFi. This matters...
If you are using mobile data, then you have a mobile-network connection and therefore roaming is working. If you have an issue making or receiving calls, that is a different issue with a different fix.
If you are using WiFi, don't have a mobile network connection and consequently are unable to use network-reliant functions, then roaming could be the reason. Testing a manual connection to every available network, is an excellent test.
