I live in UK and will holiday in Canada. While in Canada I wish to be able to call the UK for free or cheaply. I went to my local Ee store to buy a Roam Abroad pass but was told that this would only allow me, while I was in Canada, to call internally within Canada. Calls from Canada to the UK would still be prohibitively expensive. Is this correct ?

No, with the Roam Abroad Pass you may call UK & EU nos. from Canada within your UK calls allowance.
As it is not in EU, if you are on contract, you may use your usual UK allowances there with up to 50 GB data per billing month if you have more, when you buy for £11.40 / month or have already as a Smart Benefit the Roam Abroad Pass or you have an EE Max Plan. Otherwise you will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-costs/countries/canada.
If you are on contract, remember to text ROAMING to 150 before you leave UK to ensure roaming is enabled on your account.
