SMS text going to other phone without SIM card?

I have this exact same issue.  A 'test' SMS went through to the old phone even with no SIM.  The message doesn't have a box around it.

Hmm, I tried using textra (and the test messages I sent popped up).  I then went back to Google Messages and set that back to the default messaging app, but it still didn't work.  Weird.

Have you recently received a new SIM card or transferred your number from another network?

It's a brand new Redmi 2022 which I've inserted the old SIM card.  I now have no mobile internet connection, and am not receiving texts or able to browse the web.   I assumed this would automatically adjust after a while but it hasn't.

I've changed my APN settings to the EE recommended setup option  - still nothing

Does the SIM card work for texts and data in any other phone?

Turns out the phone had a fault - replaced it with the same model, and it now works perfectly.
