Hi Just spent a week on Fuertaventura I also paid fee per day for roaming. I found it absolutely useless total waste of my money. I was unable to receive or send anything via mobile with this package not even WhatsApp.   Unless I was actually at the hotel itself it didn't work, beach restaurants or days out. 

My husband phone contract is O2 he had no problems at all and had a roaming package as standard in his contract no extra costs. 

My advice stick to WiFi connections when you are at hotel or out and about.

I'm sorry to hear you had problems getting connected during your holiday.

Did you activate roaming by texting ROAMING to 150 before you travelled?

Were any daily charged added to your bill?

Your symptoms are consistent with having added a billing add-on but not activated the roaming facility. This is free of charge but is crucial as it unlocks access to foreign networks.

As per the previous reply, this is normally done by texting ROAMING to 150 before leaving the UK.

@Sharon502- roaming in Fuerteventura definitely should work (I had no issues on EE while there).

As an aside for everyone else, my phone stuck like a limpet to Orange mostly (with a hint of Movistar now and again), and 5G roaming worked pretty well.
