Colombian messages and calls from uk

Hello there peeps. 

Recently I have began a friendship with an individual in colombia. Being from the UK makes it difficult to obviously communicate as freely if they were. I have planned to visit them in the summer but wish to communicate with them easily with phone. I have their number but as I'm on a cheapish £14.50 contract sim only. I was curious as to if there was a potential add on I could arrange to help with our back and fourth messages and so on. Don't want to end up paying a £1 for every message and mobile isn't the only option I am aware of apps that's free but less convenient. Thanks in advance for any possible advice.

International calls & texts to overseas nos. from UK can be rather expensive but EE has a add-on, for £2.16 pm for those on contract or free for some legacy PAYG, that can be applied for to give these calls & texts at a fraction of the standard rates. @Louieca   It’s called what’s app.  No add on, no charge and it just uses data and that can be via WiFi or your data allowance.
