Cant send or recieve texts

I've just got a new sim with EE and I can't send or recieve text messages to/from other networks. I've checked the message centre number and have sent myself a text and both are in order. My mobile data does work but I'm concerned about the text message issue

@Laurend2  Is this texting UK numbers ?     If it’s not and I’ll assume your on PAYG ( pre pay ). You’ll need credit on your account to text none uk numbers. 

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.

I've managed to figure out the issue regarding sending texts however I can't recieve texts from automated items, eg Barclays when setting up bank account
